Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a fourth, non-consecutive term in office after defeating right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the presidential runoff on Sunday, October 25, 2026, winning 51.79 per cent of valid votes against his opponent’s 48.21 per cent.

The victory marks a major comeback for the 80-year-old left-wing leader, who finished behind Bolsonaro in the first round of voting but rallied support to retain the presidency of Latin America’s largest country.

Official results published by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed that Lula received 64.26 million votes, while Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, secured approximately 59.83 million.

Lula’s victory comes amid a wider political shift towards conservative parties in parts of South America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

His re-election provides continuity for the Workers’ Party government despite persistent concerns about living costs, public security and economic growth.

The election campaign was marked by sharp exchanges, allegations and disagreements over voting arrangements.

Tensions intensified on Sunday after a last-minute Supreme Court decision extended voting by two hours following complaints about public transport disruptions that reportedly prevented some voters from reaching polling stations.

Lula’s campaign had called for the extension, arguing that transport difficulties were restricting access to voting. Bolsonaro also sought additional voting time in some areas affected by heavy rain, but his camp criticised the nationwide extension.

The dispute highlighted the deep political divisions in Brazil, where the closely contested race pitted supporters of Lula’s social welfare policies against voters seeking a change in leadership.

Lula, a defining figure in Brazilian politics for more than four decades, entered the runoff after Bolsonaro outpolled him in the first round.

The president’s campaign subsequently intensified its public outreach, using social media videos, rallies and grassroots mobilisation to persuade undecided voters and encourage turnout.

Lula’s political journey has included a rise from poverty in northeastern Brazil to national leadership.

He first served as president from 2003 to 2010 before returning to office in 2023 after defeating Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 election.

His return followed a corruption scandal that led to his imprisonment for more than 18 months.

The convictions were later annulled on procedural grounds, allowing him to contest the presidency again.

During his current administration, Lula has highlighted social welfare programmes and efforts to reduce poverty and hunger.

His government has also faced criticism over the cost of living and concerns about insecurity in communities affected by organised crime.

Lula’s new term will begin in a politically divided country, with nearly half of voters supporting Bolsonaro in the runoff. The president will also have to work with a Congress where conservative forces remain influential.

Economic pressures, projected slower growth and demands for stronger action against criminal groups are expected to feature prominently during the next administration.

Relations with the United States could also remain a significant issue.

Lula’s campaign emphasised Brazilian sovereignty amid commercial and diplomatic tensions involving US President Donald Trump.

Bolsonaro, meanwhile, has challenged the circumstances surrounding the election and said he would seek to have the result annulled, according to reports.

Lula’s victory therefore represents both a continuation of his political leadership and the beginning of another term in which economic pressures, security concerns and divisions over the country’s direction are likely to remain central to Brazil’s political debate.
