Man Dies Rescuing Goat in Oyo

A man dies while rescuing a goat from a deep well in Oyo State; Fire Service recovers two corpses in separate incidents

The Oyo State Fire Service has recovered the corpses of 30-year-old Shina Adedeji and a 45-year-old man from two separate wells in the state, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Adedeji fell into a well at Aaje Ikose in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area on Tuesday, while the second victim died in Mokola, Saki West Local Government Area, on Monday after attempting to rescue a goat.

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms and Chairman of the state Fire Service, Moroof Akinwande, said emergency calls prompted swift response from fire officers.

“Fire officers promptly mobilised and successfully recovered the man trapped in Saki. The incident occurred when he willingly entered the well to rescue a goat,” he said.

Regarding the Ogbomoso incident, Akinwande explained that Adedeji became trapped in a well containing ammonia gas while retrieving a fetcher.

“Our officers responded immediately and recovered the casualty,” he said.

Akinwande urged the public to prioritise safety in daily activities, emphasising that life has no duplicate. He cited a similar event on January 25, 2026, when a 33-year-old man was rescued from an abandoned well in Alakia–Adegbayi, Ibadan.

The chairman highlighted that hazards in abandoned wells and deep pits remain significant, and advised residents to exercise caution around such areas.
