Aba billboard collapse

A tragedy struck Aba, Abia State, as a massive billboard owned by Alternative Adverts Ltd collapsed during a storm, leaving many injured and several feared dead

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] horrifying incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, 28 May 2025, in Aba, Abia State, when a massive unipole billboard owned by Alternative Adverts Ltd collapsed during a severe storm at the busy Salad Market junction, near the GIA Event Centre.

Eyewitnesses reported that the towering 60ft by 20ft structure crashed down suddenly amid heavy rainfall and violent winds, landing on several passenger-loaded tricycles.

The impact was catastrophic, with numerous injuries reported and several people feared dead, though the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed at press time.

In addition to the human toll, the collapse downed high-tension electricity cables, plunging the area into darkness and posing further risks to rescue operations.

It was a terrifying sight — the wind howled, and suddenly the billboard just gave way. People screamed, and everything went dark.

Emergency responders, engineers, and concerned residents quickly arrived at the scene to carry out rescue and recovery efforts.

Injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent care, while the bodies of the deceased were reportedly transported to local mortuaries.

The affected billboard, located along Aba-Owerri Road opposite Right Choice Plaza, is one of the most prominent advertising structures in the region.

Alternative Adverts Ltd, a major outdoor advertising agency in Nigeria, is yet to release an official statement. The company’s portfolio includes similar billboard placements in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and other major cities.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collapse and assess the full scale of the tragedy. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.
