Saudi Civil Defence issued a brief emergency warning in Mecca on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, after Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen intensified missile and drone attacks on the kingdom.

The National Early Warning Platform told residents of a “potential danger,” asked them to avoid crowds and open ground, and later said the danger had passed.

That alert is not the same as a confirmed strike on the Grand Mosque or the Kaaba. Reliable accounts describe sirens and a first Mecca warning in this latest round of fighting.

They do not establish that a projectile hit Islam’s holiest sanctuary, which serves nearly two billion Muslims. Tabloid lines that say “Houthis attack Mecca” run ahead of what Saudi officials have published.

Major General Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said that on Monday, 14 September, Houthi missiles and drones struck civilian objects in Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif.

He said 13 civilians were injured and seven homes and two vehicles were damaged. The Houthis claimed a large attack on King Khalid airbase in Khamis Mushait.

A Houthi-run health ministry in Sanaa said Saudi air raids killed three people, including two children, in Taiz. Riyadh has promised a firm response and has not publicly detailed every raid.

Warnings also covered Jeddah, Taif, Abha, Jazan, AlUla and Yanbu. Jeddah matters because Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been working from that city.

The Houthis have in recent days seized more of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including approaches to the Bab el-Mandeb strait, while oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dwindled amid a wider regional war.

Mecca is not a military prize. An alert there is politically explosive because of the city’s status, not because officials have confirmed damage to the Haram. Civil Defence still asked people not to gather or film after the all-clear.
