Mexico cartel retaliation sees buses, cars and stores set ablaze after authorities kill the country’s most-wanted drug kingpin

Widespread violence has erupted across parts of Mexico as cartel members launched coordinated arson attacks in retaliation for the killing of the country’s most-wanted drug kingpin during a security operation.

Armed groups set buses, private vehicles and commercial stores on fire in multiple locations, triggering panic among residents and forcing temporary road closures.

Authorities described the incidents as reprisal attacks linked to the dismantling of a major criminal network.

The unrest follows the reported killing of Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as El Mencho, the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Oseguera had long been one of the most wanted figures in Mexico and the United States, with a multi-million-dollar reward offered for information leading to his capture.

Security forces increased patrols in affected states, including Jalisco and neighbouring Michoacán, where burning vehicles were used to block highways and disrupt transport routes.

Local authorities urged residents to remain indoors while emergency services worked to restore order.

The escalation marks a volatile moment in Mexico’s ongoing battle against organised crime, with analysts warning that power struggles within cartel structures could intensify in the coming days.

Federal authorities have yet to release a comprehensive casualty report, but investigations into the coordinated attacks are ongoing.
