Moniepoint cyberbullying case sees two suspects charged in Abuja over alleged fake posts that caused panic among customers

Two social media users, Adebayo Aliu and Fatuntele Tunde, are facing criminal charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja over their alleged involvement in the Moniepoint cyberbullying case, authorities have confirmed.

The suspects are accused of orchestrating a coordinated online campaign targeting Moniepoint, a financial services company, through the creation of fake accounts and the promotion of a hashtag designed to spread unverified and damaging claims.

According to details presented before the court, the individuals allegedly encouraged users on the social media platform X to share scandalous and unverifiable experiences about the company over several months. Investigators said the campaign was deliberate and aimed at tarnishing the institution’s reputation.

Legal experts note that such actions may constitute defamation and fall within offences punishable under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.

The case has drawn attention due to its potential impact on public confidence in financial institutions.

Industry observers say the alleged campaign triggered concern among customers, many of whom rely on digital banking services for daily transactions.

The spread of unverified claims is believed to have created uncertainty among small business owners, families, and salaried workers.

The Moniepoint cyberbullying case is being closely watched as a test of accountability in Nigeria’s digital space, with stakeholders calling for firm enforcement of laws to deter similar actions in the future.

Proceedings at the Federal High Court are ongoing.
