More details have come to light on the reason the husband of one of the richest women in Africa, Folorunsho Alakija, has been suspended from the reputable Ikoyi Club, which he is also a member.

Recall that Freelanews reported on how Modupe Alakija was suspended for a year for assaulting and abusing a fellow member, the act seen as running contrary to the rules of the club.

The notice, which was printed on the club’s letterhead paper and signed by its secretary, Bamidele Ibironke, carried a smiling picture of the billionaire, read:

The above-named member of the Club is hereby placed on a one (1) year suspension from the Club for physically assaulting and abusing a fellow member, conduct injurious to the interest of the Club, thereby violating Rule 9(c) of the Club’s Rule Book.

This suspension takes effect from December 1st, 2021 to November 30, 2022.”

According to a scoop available to Freelanews, it was alleged that Alakija assaulted an unnamed Indian over nose mask.

“A member of the disciplinary committee has explained what happened to Mr Alakija. He wanted to enter the Club without his face mask. An Indian Club member at the reception advised him to mask up, but he flared up and assaulted the member. They both appeared before the Disciplinary Committee, but he came with a lawyer, who was promptly sent out of the room by the committee. After the hearing, his lawyer served the Indian member a Court summons. Anyway, from the evidence obtained from the CCTV at the reception, he was adjudged guilty of conduct unbecoming of an Ikoyi Club member and suspended for One calendar year,” it was revealed.

Alakija, apart from being a lawyer himself, is the son of the popular Nigerian Lawyer, Sir Adeyemo Alakija.

He got married to a co-lawyer, Folorunsho, in May 1976 and after his marriage, he relocated to Lagos, Nigeria, where he currently lives with his wife and four children.

Modupe Alakija alongside his wife is ranked no.20 in the Forbes Billionaires ranking and own several investments in the Oil sector and real Estates with their combined networth running into millions of dollars.
