My experience at Bolanle Austen-Peters Motherland The Musical (Photos, Videos)

It was a thrilling experience for my gang on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 when we decided to step out and pay Terra Kulture a visit to see what it had on offer.

After debating with my partner, Titilope Ahide, on the best way to help a couple, Jerry and Esther Agada, celebrate their wedding anniversary, we decided that seeing a live play would be the best option, especially when the husband used to act stage plays during his university days at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Armed with that information, we informed the couple and they loved it. ❤️

We secured our tickets for a play titled Motherland the Musical, the latest stage presentation by BAP Productions and Terra Kulture, and proceeded to have an experience; hoping for a panacea to our souls after a year long hardwork before the holidays end.

Directed by Bolanle Austen Peters, the musical premiered on Friday December 23, 2022 and features Francis Onwochei, Temi Otedola, Tosin Adeyemi, Kelvin Mary Ndukwe and Uzo Osimkpa among many others.

The play is about a group of young political rallyists, who are fed up with the state of the country, and confronted a couple, an Igbo man and a Fulani woman, who share the story of their romance starting in 1957, on the brink of Nigeria’s independence, and how the country’s history has shaped their love.

The narrative was conveyed through music, romance, needed dialogues, sound and lighting effects. Motherland the Musical tells the story of Nigeria; the past, the present and the hopes for the future.

The director, Bolanle Austen-Peters, once described her vision for the musical as “a showcase of the story of Nigeria, highlighting the beauty of our different cultures while also acknowledging the perspective of the young people who want to be a part of the change that takes this nation to greater heights. It will be an entertaining, colourful and rich show with an engaging story, exciting musical numbers and a beautiful message.”

Her company, Bolanle Austen-Peters (BAP) Productions, is not new to the game. It was responsible for many box office hits and can boast of nine plays that have been performed on three continents including Saro the Musical, Wakaa the Musical, Fela and The Kalakuta Queens and Death and the King’s Horseman written by Wole Soyinka.

We had to make do with the regular tickets and a 7:00pm show despite booking a 3:00pm ticket. We were informed that the 3:00pm show was overbooked and the organisers appealed to us to reschedule for the last show in the in day. This we gladly did because there were many other things to see at Terra Kulture.

During the waiting period, we were able to savour the delicacies on offer at the restaurant and also use the opportunity to visit her gallery where our ladies took pictures and appreciated the ingeniousness painters.

Later that night, the producer herself apologised to us over the showtime extension.

“Apologies about today Sir 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿 It was a crazy day, the platform we use for ticketing has been causing us grieve. More tickets than assigned for sale were sold. We made arrangement for the excess we expected but the people that showed up were more than the people we expected and with valid tickets due to the glitch on the ticketing platform,” she wrote in a Whatsapp chat.

Little did she realise that our whole day at Terra Kulture on December 27, 2022 was an experience we would always cherish for the rest of our lives; infact the couple, whose anniversary took us down there, were so ecstatic through out our trip back home, they couldn’t stop talking about it.

“Thanks a million for yesterday. I will savour it for a long time to come. Blessings upon blessings boss,” Jerry wrote in a message to me.

And the wife said: Thank you so much for the mind-blowing experience.
