Police report indicts Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over false claims linking Akpabio to murder and organ harvesting

A police investigation has formally indicted Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central over allegations that she falsely accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of involvement in the murder of late Iniobong Umoren and the harvesting of her organs.

The report, dated 3 February 2026 and signed by Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede of the Police Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja, followed a petition by Sandra Duru, President of The Unique Family Foundation, who reported the claims in April 2025.

According to the investigation, Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly contacted Ms Duru on 27 March 2025, asserting that Mr Akpabio and his wife were responsible for Ms Umoren’s death to “treat” the Senate president’s spouse.

Investigators reviewed post-mortem records, trial documents, and family statements, confirming that no organs were removed and that convicted murderer Uduak Frank Akpan was solely responsible.

The police determined that the information communicated by the senator was “false and without any iota of truth whatsoever,” and that the Akpabios had no involvement in the murder or alleged organ harvesting.

Following the findings, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation filed three-count criminal defamation charges against Akpoti-Uduaghan at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on 29 March 2025 under Sections 391 and 392 of the Penal Code applicable in the FCT.

The case did not proceed to conclusion after Mr Akpabio chose to discontinue the prosecution, prompting the Attorney-General to seek withdrawal of the charges.

The police commended Ms Duru for her “patriotism and courage” in reporting the allegations and aiding the investigation, noting that her actions clarified public controversy over several months.
