NDPC probes Temu over alleged data protection breaches

NDPC launches investigation into Temu over potential breaches of Nigeria’s Data Protection Act, citing accountability, transparency, and cross-border data handling

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has ordered an immediate investigation into the data processing activities of Temu, the global e-commerce platform, over potential violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act).

The directive was issued by NDPC National Commissioner/CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, citing concerns over online surveillance, data minimisation, transparency, duty of care, accountability, and cross-border transfer of personal information.

According to Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement & Regulations at NDPC, preliminary findings show that Temu processes personal information for approximately 12.7 million users in Nigeria, with a global user base of 70 million daily active users.

The investigation aims to ensure that Temu’s operations comply with the NDP Act, particularly regarding lawful processing of Nigerian users’ personal data.

Dr Olatunji emphasised that processors acting on behalf of data controllers must verify compliance with the NDP Act. Failure to do so may result in *egal liability under the law.
