Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has assured the people of Ijebuland that a new Awujale will emerge before May 29, as efforts continue to conclude the succession process following the death of the former monarch, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
Abiodun gave the assurance at the Ogun East Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting in Ijebu-Ode, which was attended by representatives of various interest groups.

According to a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday by the governor’s Media Adviser, Kayode Akinmade, Abiodun said his administration was committed to ensuring a peaceful and widely accepted process for selecting the next monarch.
He urged residents to remain calm and patient while the necessary procedures were being completed.
“I acknowledge the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of Ijebuland. Our people should remain calm and patient as the necessary processes are being concluded,” the governor said.
He added that the government was giving the matter the attention it deserved to ensure that the emergence of a new Awujale received the acceptance and support of the people.
The governor said his administration was focused on ensuring that the succession process was conducted peacefully and smoothly.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona at the age of 91. The late monarch reigned for 65 years, making his succession a significant matter for the people of Ijebuland.
Abiodun’s latest assurance comes amid expectations among residents for the emergence of a new traditional ruler to occupy the revered stool.
The governor did not provide further details on the specific stages remaining in the selection process.
Beyond the traditional institution, Abiodun used the stakeholders’ meeting to discuss his administration’s achievements over the past seven years and strengthen engagement with grassroots representatives.
He identified oil exploration around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area as major opportunities for economic growth.
According to the governor, the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone is also expected to attract investment, create employment opportunities and position Ogun State as a centre for maritime trade, manufacturing and logistics.
Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and investment promotion, while appreciating President Bola Tinubu for supporting critical projects and initiatives in the state.
He urged residents and other stakeholders to sustain cooperation in pursuit of peace and development.

The emergence of a new Awujale remains an important issue for Ijebuland, given the institution’s cultural significance and the long reign of the late Oba Adetona.
