Nicholas Ukachukwu land fraud scandal erupts as N1bn estate deal collapses. APC candidate rescued from angry mob after subscribers demand refund or land

Nicholas Ukachukwu land fraud scandal has taken centre stage in the lead-up to Anambra’s governorship election, after the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate was allegedly rescued from an angry mob of creditors at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

According to circulating social media footage and multiple reports, Senator Nicholas Ukachukwu, who is vying for the governorship seat under the APC, was confronted by aggrieved real estate subscribers demanding the refund of ₦1 billion.

The sum was allegedly paid to his estate development firm, Chupi Company Limited, for land allocations that have not materialised since 2022.

The subscribers — said to have been searching for the embattled politician — allegedly located him at the upscale hotel, where they blocked his exit and demanded immediate answers.

It reportedly took hotel officials and his personal security team to shield him from what was described as an “intense scene.”

“This was a very big embarrassment,” said a witness, referring to the unfolding of the incident. “He was surrounded and confronted directly. It was tense.”

According to a petition submitted to a coalition of over 40 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the subscribers claim they paid their funds via Zoe Dew Dawn Nigeria Ltd, a real estate agency that allegedly transferred the full ₦1 billion to Ukachukwu’s Chupi Company Limited three years ago.

Despite the large payment, not a single plot of land has reportedly been allocated to date — nor have any refunds been issued.

The coalition stated that multiple efforts were made to resolve the matter privately, but Ukachukwu allegedly refused to honour the agreement, leaving the affected subscribers with no option but to go public and demand action.

The coalition labelled the situation a “monumental breach of trust,” calling it a stain on transparency and accountability — two values critical to public office.

“The refusal or failure of Senator Ukachukwu’s Chupi Company Limited to fulfil its contractual and moral obligations casts a dark shadow on his integrity,” said the CSO group, questioning his fitness to govern Anambra State.

The CSOs have now issued a seven-day ultimatum to Ukachukwu and his company to either refund the money or allocate the promised land.

Failure to comply, they warned, will result in mass peaceful protests across Anambra.

The coalition also revealed plans to escalate the matter to multiple institutions, including:

  • The Anambra State Chapter and National Secretariat of the APC
  • Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
  • Nigerian Police Force (NPF)
  • Inspector General of Police
  • Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS)

They are urging law enforcement, anti-corruption agencies, and regulatory bodies to launch immediate investigations and ensure that justice is served without political interference.
