The federal government has declared Thursday, October 1, as public holiday to mark the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary Celebration.

The minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the declaration on behalf of the federal government on Tuesday, September 29.

Aregbesola congratulated all Nigerians on the celebration of the country’s Diamond Jubilee and reiterated the government’s commitment to the socio-economic transformation of the country.

He said Nigerians’ warmth, welcoming spirit and love, as well as the abundant wealth inherent in human capital, makes Nigeria unarguably the leading black nation in the world and Africa’s pride and beacon of hope.

Aregbesola said though celebrating sixty years of independence really calls for pomp and pageantry, the celebration will be low-keyed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While wishing Nigerians a fruitful independence celebration, he reminded them of the fact that the country’s founding fathers, in spite of the differences in faith, tribe and tongue came together for Nigeria’s independence.

He, therefore, called on all Nigerians to join hands together with the present administration in its quest to ensure a better Nigeria for all citizens.

Earlier, Freelanews reported that a group under the aegis of Project6060 revealed its plans to honour 60 outstanding Nigerians during the forthcoming independence anniversary.

The group announced its plans during a press conference on Wednesday, September 23 in Abuja with the theme: Unveiling the 60 Eminent Nation-Builders @ 60.

The shortlisted 60 Nigerians to be featured in Project 6060 compendium will have distinguished themselves through diligence, hard work, and patriotism to their fatherland and most importantly, contributed immensely to national development.
