Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, called for solution-driven action and greater civic responsibility as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to uphold patriotism, resilience and determination while reflecting on the country’s journey since independence and the responsibilities required to build a stronger future.

The governor said the anniversary should serve as more than a celebration, describing it as an opportunity for citizens to reflect on Nigeria’s progress and recommit themselves to the ideals upon which the country was founded.

“Sixty-six years is not just a round number. It is a significant milestone,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He asked Nigerians to consider the kind of country they want to leave for future generations, noting that successive generations have contributed to Nigeria’s development.

“Some of us were born in Nigeria, some of us have lived here all our lives, and our parents and grandparents helped to build this country. Today, we must ask ourselves what kind of Nigeria we want to leave for the next generation,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that nation-building should not be regarded as the sole responsibility of government.

According to the governor, citizens also have important obligations to the country and their communities, including obeying laws, paying taxes and protecting public property.

“Government has responsibilities to the people, and the people also have responsibilities to government and to one another,” he said.

He also urged Nigerians to participate responsibly in the democratic process and contribute actively to the development of their communities.

The governor’s message placed emphasis on collective responsibility, suggesting that meaningful national progress requires cooperation between government institutions and citizens.

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, Sanwo-Olu’s call centres on translating patriotism into practical action and ensuring that the country’s next chapter is shaped by responsible leadership and active citizenship.
