Nigeria launches 11-character digital postcode system

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System on Thursday, October 1, 2026, giving addressable buildings across the country unique 11-character digital codes designed to improve location identification, commerce, emergency response and public service delivery.

The nationwide rollout marks a significant change in how locations can be identified in Nigeria, moving beyond broader geographical postcode references towards a building-level digital system.

The initiative is being driven by NIPOST under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, with the system using Geographic Information System technology to create precise, machine-readable location references.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr ‘Bosun Tijani, said the system is intended to address longstanding difficulties associated with finding people, businesses and communities.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said at the launch.

The new code is structured across five levels: state, local government area, district, area and individual building.

The official NIPOST platform describes it as a unique 11-character code linked to the precise location of each addressable building.

That means a home, office, school, farm, shop or other addressable location can have its own digital postcode rather than relying solely on a postcode shared across a wider locality.

The system is also designed to work alongside existing street addresses.

Tijani said Nigerians can share their codes with customers, delivery companies, visitors and others who need to locate a particular building.

For businesses, the change could have practical implications for e-commerce and last-mile delivery.

A more precise location reference can help companies verify customer addresses and reduce the uncertainty that often comes with informal directions.

NIPOST Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer, Tola Odeyemi, described the initiative as a wider addressing infrastructure rather than a project limited to postal services.

“Everyone in Nigeria has a location. Now every location has a postcode,” Odeyemi said.

He linked the system to applications including e-commerce, last-mile delivery, emergency response, banking and credit, and public-service planning.

The Federal Government has also positioned the system as infrastructure for emergency and security operations.

In June, the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and NIPOST convened a national workshop on operationalising the digital postcode for national security and public safety.

Representatives of security agencies, emergency-response institutions, government ministries and development partners attended the session.

The earlier consultation reflected the government’s intention to integrate location information into systems that require accurate identification of people, buildings and communities.

Tijani said at the launch that accurate location data could help an emergency responder find a family more efficiently, allow businesses to extend their delivery networks and help public institutions reach communities with essential services.

The economic argument is also central to the rollout.

The minister linked the digital addressing infrastructure to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition of growing Nigeria’s economy to $1 trillion, arguing that reliable location information is one of the foundations needed to support participation in commerce and access to services.

The government has separately highlighted the financial consequences of poor addressing.

Channels Television reported that Tijani said Nigeria loses an estimated N50 billion to N80 billion annually through missed and failed deliveries associated with poor addressing.

The minister said the problem extends beyond logistics to emergency services, security, financial services, businesses and government planning.

The new system is therefore expected to serve several sectors at once.

For logistics companies, it can provide a standard location reference for delivery operations.

For financial institutions and other businesses, the system can support address verification.

For government agencies, its location data could contribute to planning and service delivery.

The official NIPOST platform is already open for postcode searches through postcode.gov.ng, where individuals can look up their codes.

NIPOST also says an app is available for iOS and Android, allowing users to find, save and share digital postcodes.

Businesses and technology organisations can also build around the infrastructure.

NIPOST says organisations can use its services for customer and merchant address verification, address lookup and standardisation, with API, web and mobile SDK options available for authorised users.

The system forms part of the Federal Government’s wider digital public infrastructure agenda.

The National Digital Addressing Policy and Digital Postcode System had received Federal Executive Council approval before the June implementation workshop, with officials describing it as a foundation for location intelligence and national service delivery.

The rollout had also been signposted several months before the launch.

In June, Tijani said the first phase of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System was scheduled for October, describing the initiative as critical infrastructure for commerce, security, emergency response and public services.

The launch does not mean Nigerians have to abandon their existing street addresses.

Rather, the new code is intended to provide an additional, more precise digital reference that can be used alongside conventional addresses.

NIPOST is encouraging individuals, businesses and organisations to begin incorporating their codes into everyday transactions and operations.

For a country where locations are frequently communicated through landmarks, junctions and verbal directions, the ambition is substantial.

The success of the Digital Postcode System will ultimately depend not only on the availability of the codes but also on their adoption by businesses, government agencies, technology platforms, emergency services and the wider public.

The Federal Government is now asking Nigerians to find and share their individual building codes as the new infrastructure moves from national rollout to everyday use.
