Nigeria World Cup comeback

Augustine Eguavoen remains confident Nigeria can still qualify for the 2026 World Cup, urging focus, unity and belief from fans and players alike

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]igeria World Cup comeback remains possible according to former coach Augustine Eguavoen, who has urged fans and players to remain united and focused.

Speaking in the wake of Nigeria’s uncertain position in their qualification group, the former Super Eagles boss remains optimistic about the national team’s chances.

Eguavoen, who briefly stepped in after Finidi George’s resignation, stressed that qualification is still achievable if the players stay disciplined and treat every remaining match as a final.

Currently sitting fourth in their group, Nigeria must win all their remaining fixtures to stand a realistic chance of booking a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the odds, the 59-year-old coach believes Nigeria has both the squad depth and the national backing required to complete the task.

With the talent in the team and support from Nigerians, I believe we can do it.

The former international also guided Nigeria to secure a spot at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before the arrival of newly appointed permanent coach, Eric Chelle.

While Chelle now bears the responsibility of leading the Eagles forward, Eguavoen’s message was clear and resolute.

“It’s a tough challenge, but it’s still possible,” he told ACL Sports. “With the talent in the team and support from Nigerians, I believe we can do it. I’m 100% sure because the players are eager to play at the World Cup.”

He further added that the approach must now shift from panic to purpose. “I’m not focusing on the last game. The goal now is to take it one game at a time and treat each match like a final.”

Eguavoen’s rallying cry arrives at a critical time when Nigerian football fans are divided over recent performances.

But for the veteran tactician, belief and national unity remain the most powerful tools the Super Eagles can count on in their race to qualify.
