Germany-led charter operation returns 36 Nigerians alongside five Ghanaians and one Gambian as Austria maintains its tougher removal policy
Thirty-six Nigerians were deported from four European countries in a coordinated operation that returned 41 people to Nigeria and Ghana between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, August 27, 2026.

Germany accounted for the largest group, deporting 29 Nigerians. Austria returned three Nigerians, while Luxembourg deported two and Hungary one.
The German contingent comprised 35 people in total, including 29 Nigerians, five Ghanaians and one Gambian.

The latest exercise reflects a broader tightening of immigration enforcement across parts of Europe, where governments have stepped up the removal of people who lack legal residence rights or have been convicted of offences.
For Nigeria, the latest operation adds to a growing number of citizens returned from Germany this year.

The repeated use of charter flights underlines the increasingly coordinated nature of European return operations, with countries sharing transport arrangements when removing nationals whose immigration cases have reached the deportation stage.
Austria has also pursued a notably firm immigration policy in 2026.
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said more than 7,000 people had been deported or otherwise removed from the country during the first half of the year, a figure that exceeded the number of asylum applications recorded over the same period. (VisaHQ News)
Karner has presented the figures as evidence of what he describes as negative net migration, with stricter border controls, faster asylum decisions and returns contributing to the change.
“The negative net migration is being continued through a consistent deportation policy,” Karner said.
“Never before have so many illegal residents and criminal offenders been removed from the country by Austrian authorities as in the first half of this year. We will continue on this necessary path undeterred.”
The Austrian government’s position comes against a wider European debate over migration, asylum applications and the enforcement of removal orders.
The reported operation should not, however, be interpreted as meaning that all 36 Nigerians were deported for criminal offences.

For Nigerians living in Europe, the development is a reminder of the increasingly rigorous enforcement environment surrounding immigration status.
For those whose residence rights have expired, asylum claims have been rejected or whose cases involve criminal convictions, the consequences can ultimately include forced return.
At the same time, the scale and regularity of recent charter operations point to a more systematic approach to deportations rather than isolated removals.
