The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Nigeria’s national weather forecasting agency, issued a weather outlook in Abuja on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, warning that cloudiness, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across much of the country over the next three days, with residents advised to prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions.

NiMet said the forecast covers the period from Wednesday through Friday, with thunderstorms and moderate rain expected to affect states across the northern, North Central and southern regions at different times of the day.

The agency also cautioned that strong winds could precede rainfall in areas where thunderstorms develop.

According to the forecast, Wednesday morning will see patches of cloud with thunderstorms and moderate rain over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states.

Later in the day, similar conditions are expected to extend to Kaduna and much of the North East.

Across the North Central region, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms with light rain over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau and Nasarawa states.

By afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall is expected to spread across Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau and the FCT.

Southern Nigeria is expected to remain largely cloudy during the morning, with light rain likely in parts of the South South before moderate rainfall develops later in the day across Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, as well as much of the South East and South South.

The outlook indicates that NiMet 3-Day Thunderstorms will continue on Thursday, with moderate rainfall forecast across most northern states after morning thunderstorms in Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe.

The North Central region is expected to experience widespread thunderstorms throughout the day, while rain is also forecast across the South South and parts of the South East.

On Friday, morning thunderstorms are expected over Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba, before spreading across much of northern Nigeria later in the day.

The North Central region is also forecast to experience afternoon and evening thunderstorms, while moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo, the South East and the South South.

The advisory comes during Nigeria’s peak rainy season, when intense rainfall has frequently led to flash flooding, travel disruption and damage to infrastructure in several parts of the country.

Earlier this week, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) activated its flood response centre to strengthen preparedness for possible flooding as heavy rains continue across vulnerable communities.

NiMet urged residents to take appropriate precautions, warning that strong winds may accompany thunderstorms.

The agency advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall where possible, disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees because of the risk of falling branches or uprooted trees.

“Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur,” NiMet said.

The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe and effective flight planning.
