NiMet issues rain warning as thunderstorms hit Nigeria

Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has issued a rain warning for several parts of Nigeria on Monday, September 7, 2026, forecasting thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across northern and central states, with possible localised flooding in vulnerable communities.

The agency made the prediction in its daily weather forecast covering the period from midnight on Monday to 11:59pm.

NiMet said morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall were expected in parts of Adamawa, Kebbi and Taraba states.

Most other parts of northern Nigeria could experience thunderstorms and moderate rainfall later in the afternoon and evening.

Across the central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Kwara states, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms with light rainfall in some locations.

The agency added that moderate rainfall was expected across much of the central region as the day progressed.

Southern Nigeria is also expected to experience unsettled weather. NiMet forecast cloudy conditions with light rainfall in parts of Ebonyi, Edo, Delta, Abia, Cross River, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa states during the morning.

Light rainfall could spread across parts of the South-East, South-South and South-West during the afternoon and evening.

The forecast comes amid continued concerns about the impact of heavy rainfall on communities with inadequate drainage and low-lying terrain.

NiMet warned that moderate rainfall, particularly across northern and central Nigeria, could result in temporary water accumulation and localised flooding in vulnerable areas.

Residents were advised to take precautions during thunderstorms, including staying away from open spaces and seeking shelter in safe buildings.

The agency also recommended disconnecting electrical appliances where necessary during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of electrical damage.

For motorists, NiMet urged extra caution because rainfall can reduce visibility and make roads slippery.

Drivers and pedestrians were also warned against attempting to cross flooded roads, where water levels and underlying road conditions may be difficult to assess.

The weather agency further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet when planning and conducting flight operations.

The latest NiMet rain warning highlights the importance of local weather awareness as rainfall patterns continue to vary across the country.

While the forecast does not mean that every location will experience severe weather, residents in areas identified for thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are being encouraged to remain alert and take sensible precautions.
