The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has launched an investigation into the reported deaths of 33 suspected illegal miners in Niger State, following allegations that the detainees died while in custody under circumstances that remain unclear.

The incident, which has drawn widespread public attention, reportedly involved suspected illegal miners arrested during an operation against unlawful mining activities in the state. Authorities said the exact cause of the deaths has not yet been established, stressing that a full investigation is underway.

The NSCDC confirmed that its Niger State Command had commenced an internal and independent inquiry to determine what transpired, while assuring the public that anyone found culpable would be held accountable in accordance with the law.

According to reports, the deceased were among individuals detained over alleged involvement in illegal mining, a persistent security and economic challenge in parts of Niger State. The state has witnessed repeated government crackdowns on unlicensed mining due to concerns over environmental degradation, bandit financing and revenue losses.

The command said investigators are gathering statements, reviewing detention records and examining all available evidence to establish the sequence of events leading to the reported fatalities.

The development has prompted calls from concerned stakeholders for a transparent investigation, with demands that the findings be made public to reassure citizens and the families of those affected.

Illegal mining remains a major challenge across several northern states, where security agencies have intensified operations against operators accused of exploiting mineral resources without licences. The Federal Government has repeatedly warned that the illicit trade fuels criminal networks and undermines legitimate mining activities.

As of the time of filing this report, the NSCDC said the investigation was ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation until the inquiry is concluded.
