The Obi Kwankwaso ticket emerges for the 2027 election as Peter Obi names Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso his running mate under the NDC

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Obi made the announcement on Saturday shortly after his formal confirmation as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the next general election.

The development follows the NDC presidential primary, where party delegates adopted Obi as the party’s standard-bearer for the 2027 contest.

The pairing brings together two of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition figures and is expected to significantly influence political calculations ahead of the election.

Both Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso recently defected from the African Democratic Congress, citing internal divisions and prolonged legal disputes within their former political platform.

Speaking after his confirmation, Obi unveiled Kwankwaso as his vice-presidential choice, completing what party leaders described as a strategic alliance designed to broaden the NDC’s national appeal.

The Obi Kwankwaso ticket combines two politicians with established support bases in different regions of the country.

Obi enjoys considerable backing among many young voters, particularly in parts of the South-East and South-South, while Kwankwaso remains a dominant political force in Kano State and across sections of Northern Nigeria through his grassroots political movement.

Party officials expressed optimism that the alliance would strengthen the NDC’s electoral prospects and enhance its competitiveness in the race for the presidency.

According to the party leadership, the combination of Obi’s reform-focused message and Kwankwaso’s extensive political network provides a strong foundation for building a broad national coalition ahead of the polls.

The announcement is expected to trigger fresh political realignments as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general election.

Political observers say the emergence of the Obi Kwankwaso ticket could reshape opposition politics by consolidating support across key voting blocs and creating a formidable challenge in the presidential race.

With campaigns still in their early stages, attention is now likely to shift to how rival parties respond to the new alliance and the broader implications for Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
