Peter Obi Atiku relationship 2027 clarified as Obi denies avoiding Atiku, saying they remain close despite shifting political alliances

Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has denied claims that he is avoiding former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Peter Obi made the clarification on Friday in Cape Town while attending the Spier Dialogue 2026, a pan-African governance forum.

Addressing speculation about tensions between the two politicians, Peter Obi insisted that he shares a close and respectful relationship with Atiku Abubakar, describing him as an elder brother and political mentor.

“There are very few human beings who are as close as I am to Atiku. So I can’t be running from him,” he said.

“This man is my very respected leader and elder brother. I don’t run from him. Never.”

The comments come amid renewed political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general election, where alliances and defections have continued to reshape emerging coalitions.

The Peter Obi Atiku relationship 2027 narrative has drawn attention following their earlier collaboration within the African Democratic Congress coalition platform, which was formed to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming polls.

Obi formally joined the coalition on January 1, 2026, a move welcomed at the time by Atiku Abubakar, who described it as a significant step toward opposition unity.

However, the alliance later collapsed after internal disagreements and legal disputes within the coalition structure.

Peter Obi later cited unresolved internal issues and a shift in focus away from national priorities as reasons for his exit, rather than personal disagreements with Atiku or other party leaders.

Following his departure, Obi aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside other political figures, including Rabi’u Kwankwaso, advocating for an end to litigation-driven politics within party structures.

Despite the political reshuffling, Peter Obi reiterated that personal relationships remained intact and should not be confused with political disagreements.

Political analysts say the latest remarks are aimed at calming speculation within opposition circles as parties position themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election cycle.
