On Thursday in Gombe State, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, unveiled the Flow With Confidence initiative, a nationwide programme targeting improved menstrual health for vulnerable schoolgirls across Nigeria.

Through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Mrs. Tinubu pledged that each state and the FCT will receive 10,000 packs of disposable sanitary pads. Each beneficiary will be supported with a full year’s supply.

“In today’s modern world, no girl should have to miss school because of her inability to afford sanitary products,” the First Lady said. “This programme promotes knowledge, dignity, and confidence.”

She highlighted how many girls in rural areas are forced to miss school during their periods due to the high cost or unavailability of sanitary products, often resorting to unsafe alternatives that jeopardise their health and education.

According to Mrs. Tinubu, the initiative is designed not just to provide products but to spark a cultural shift in how menstrual health is treated in schools and communities.

The programme received backing from the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, and Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who both committed to expanding the reach of the initiative.

Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, praised the First Lady for her intervention in health and education, while community leaders and traditional rulers were urged to ensure that the menstrual packs reach the intended girls in rural communities.

The First Lady’s visit also included the opening of the Gombe State Health Summit, where she emphasised that national prosperity is inseparable from health investment.

She was later honoured with the traditional title of Sarauniya Yakin Kumo (Queen Warrior of Kumo) by the Emir of Akko.

With the Flow With Confidence initiative, Oluremi Tinubu signals a powerful message: menstrual health is not a luxury, but a right—one that directly affects girl-child education and dignity in Nigeria.
