The First Lady says Nigeria’s rich culture, food and tourism assets can drive economic growth as she hosts Qatar’s ambassador at the State House in Abuja

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace the country’s rich cultural and natural attractions, saying the tourism sector holds enormous potential to create jobs and diversify the nation’s economy.

Speaking while receiving Yousef Bin Mohammed Al-Hail at the State House in Abuja, Senator Tinubu said Nigeria must do more to harness its tourism assets as a sustainable source of revenue and national development.

“We have not really explored the nation optimally. Our tourism sector remains our strong point. It gives employment. Look at our food, culture,” the First Lady said.

“We are a friendly people.”

She noted that Nigeria’s diversity, cultural heritage and hospitality present significant opportunities for economic growth if properly developed, encouraging citizens to explore and promote destinations across the country.

The First Lady acknowledged that Nigeria continues to face developmental challenges but stressed that such issues are not unique to the country. She expressed confidence in the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address them.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing all he can. We are undaunted and indeed the nation will be great again,” she said.

Senator Tinubu also commended the Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, for her contributions to education and community development across Africa.

She expressed appreciation for the partnership between Nigeria and the Government of Qatar, particularly in the education sector, noting that the Federal Ministry of Education had reported positive progress from ongoing collaborative efforts aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children in the country.

In his remarks, Ambassador Al-Hail said his perception of Nigeria changed significantly after arriving in the country, revealing that negative narratives circulating on social media had initially left him apprehensive.

“Nigeria is not what we hear and see on the social media. It is a beautiful country with wonderful people. I have been to Lagos, I have seen the beaches, it is a beautiful place,” the ambassador said.

He pledged to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Qatar, saying he would continue working to deepen cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries.

During the visit, Ambassador Al-Hail presented a letter from Sheikha Moza bint Nasser to the First Lady, reaffirming the growing partnership between both nations in education and other areas of shared interest.

The meeting reflects the expanding diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and Qatar, particularly in education, cultural exchange and human capital development.

Analysts say enhanced cooperation in these sectors, alongside renewed attention to tourism, could support Nigeria’s broader efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil while creating new opportunities for employment and investment.
