Ms. Maureen Chigbo, President of GOCOP, has stated that the organisation’s core mission is to sanitise the online media space and establish clear standards for the industry in Nigeria.

This commitment aims to address concerns about professional conduct and content quality.

Speaking at the launch of GOCOP’s maiden publication, “Nigeria Media Renaissance: GOCOP Perspectives on Online Publishing,” and a fundraising event for the GOCOP Media Centre in Abuja, Chigbo emphasised the crucial need for collaboration with various stakeholders to achieve this ambitious goal.

She highlighted the professional background of the Guild’s members.

“As a group of professional journalists with over two decades of experience in mainstream media, GOCOP is committed to promoting ethical online publishing practices,” she said.

Chigbo noted that the organisation’s members dedicate themselves to upholding the principles of truth, fairness, and balanced reporting.

They have also introduced a self regulatory mechanism to ensure compliance among their ranks.

To maintain these high standards, GOCOP has established several internal committees, including a Disciplinary Committee/Ombudsman.

This body will address public complaints and ensure accountability within the online publishing sphere.

Chigbo stressed that the organisation takes its self regulation responsibility very seriously and commits to weeding out unprofessional conduct from its members.

The GOCOP President acknowledged the valuable contributions of various members, contributors, and supporters.

She specifically mentioned Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi, publisher of PREMIUM TIMES, who wrote the foreword to the newly launched book.

Dr Ike Neliaku, the book’s reviewer and president of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), also received gratitude.

Chigbo further expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, various state governments, institutions, and corporate organisations for their support in achieving GOCOP’s objectives.

She appealed for generous donations to strengthen GOCOP’s operations and facilitate the construction of the Guild’s Media Centre.

This centre will empower members to run their businesses profitably, fostering sustainability in online journalism.

She also urged public relations practitioners, advertisers, governments, and civil society organisations to support GOCOP businesses.

Chigbo underscored the critical role that online media plays in building a society where justice, peace, and individual rights are respected.

By promoting ethical online publishing practices and collaborating with stakeholders, GOCOP aims to establish itself as a leading voice in the online media industry.
