Osimhen faces criticism after Villarreal clash

The Galatasaray striker scored in Istanbul but became embroiled in a heated exchange with Santiago Mouriño during Saturday’s 2-1 pre-season defeat

Victor Osimhen faced criticism on Saturday, August 8, 2026, after Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen clashed with Villarreal defender Santiago Mouriño during Galatasaray’s 2-1 pre-season defeat at RAMS Park in Istanbul, with Villarreal coach Iñigo Pérez accusing the Nigerian forward of entering the contest with an intention to fight.

The flashpoint came in the 37th minute when Mouriño used his body to impede Osimhen as the striker attempted to reach a cross inside the Villarreal penalty area.

Osimhen reacted angrily and pushed the Uruguay international to the ground. Players from both sides quickly intervened, preventing the confrontation from developing further.

Referee Kadir Sağlam booked both players for the incident.

Pérez was particularly critical of Osimhen after the final whistle, arguing that the Nigerian should have faced stronger disciplinary action.

“The opposing team didn’t come onto the field to play football, but to fight,” Pérez said.

“Osimhen attacked our player out of nowhere and only got a yellow card.”

The confrontation overshadowed a promising individual display from Osimhen, who had earlier given Galatasaray a crucial moment of encouragement by scoring their only goal.

Villarreal had taken the lead through Ayoze Pérez before Osimhen rose to meet Eren Elmalı’s cross and headed the ball into the net to restore parity.

Georges Mikautadze then put Villarreal back in front before half-time, with the Spanish side protecting its advantage through the remainder of the match.

The result extended Galatasaray’s difficult pre-season run.

The Turkish champions had already suffered defeats against Monza and Venezia, while a 3-3 draw with Rennes followed the Venezia loss.

Galatasaray had opened their preparations with a 5-1 victory over Ümraniyespor.

For Osimhen, the match provided another reminder of the intensity that has accompanied his time in Istanbul.

The 27-year-old Nigerian joined Galatasaray permanently from Napoli in 2025 for a reported €75 million, a record transfer fee in Turkish football.

His performances have also made him a central figure in the club’s recent success.

During his first season at Galatasaray, he scored 37 goals in 41 appearances during his loan spell, helping the Istanbul club win the Turkish league title.

His second season brought further significant contributions, including seven Champions League goals, according to Galatasaray, while the club secured another domestic championship.

That attacking pedigree remains a major asset as Galatasaray prepare to defend their Süper Lig title. However, the confrontation with Mouriño has added an unwanted layer of controversy to the closing stages of their preparations.

The criticism from Pérez does not, by itself, establish that Osimhen deliberately sought a physical confrontation.

The incident followed a challenge in a crowded penalty area, and the referee’s decision to caution both players reflected the on-field assessment at the time.

Galatasaray will now turn their attention towards competitive football after a pre-season campaign that has exposed both their attacking promise and areas requiring improvement.

For Osimhen, the Villarreal match offered a mixture of encouragement and frustration: another goal to build confidence before the new campaign, but also a heated incident that became the most discussed moment of an otherwise productive outing.
