Osimhen reveals reason for turning down Galatasaray’s no. 9 jersey

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he turned down Galatasaray’s iconic number nine shirt, choosing to continue wearing the number 45 jersey ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Osimhen, who completed a permanent move to the Turkish champions after a successful loan spell, said the decision was based on his belief that the number 45 has brought him positive results since arriving at the club.

The Nigerian forward had been expected to inherit Galatasaray’s number nine shirt, a jersey traditionally reserved for leading attackers and previously associated with Argentine striker Mauro Icardi.

However, Osimhen opted to keep the number that has become part of his identity at Rams Park.

Explaining his decision, Osimhen said he chose to keep the No. 45 shirt because it has brought him good fortune since joining Galatasaray.

“I believe you will sell more shirts, but I think you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” Osimhen said, according to Turkish sports platform Sabah Spor.

“I want to continue with the same number,” he added.

The striker’s decision reflects his personal connection with the jersey number, which has followed him through a period of strong performances in Turkey.

Since joining Galatasaray, Osimhen has become one of the club’s most influential players, winning admiration from supporters through his goals, physical presence and attacking ability.

The 27-year-old recently opened his pre-season scoring account during Galatasaray’s 3-3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul as the club prepares for another demanding campaign.

With domestic success to defend and European ambitions ahead, Osimhen will hope his familiar number 45 continues to bring the same impact as he leads Galatasaray’s attack into the new season.
