The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days from October 20, 2026, to carry out essential repairs and resurfacing.
The proposed closure, which is subject to final confirmation, is intended to address deteriorating runway conditions and improve operational safety ahead of the expected increase in passenger traffic during the Christmas season.

FAAN disclosed the plan in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.
According to the authority, sections of the runway have developed potholes and extensive surface cracks, with recent heavy rainfall worsening the damage.
“The planned intervention has become necessary due to the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracking, which have been further aggravated by recent heavy rainfall,” the statement said.
FAAN said the rehabilitation programme would involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
The project will also include a runway extension designed to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region increases.
The authority said the expansion was aimed at improving passenger comfort and facilitating a smoother travel experience for airport users.
The proposed works are expected to strengthen the airport’s infrastructure and prepare it for higher passenger and flight volumes during the busy end-of-year travel period.
FAAN has advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to remain in contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.
The authority said it would continue engaging relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.
It also appealed for the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines and other airport users while the rehabilitation work is carried out.
The planned intervention forms part of FAAN’s stated commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
