Singer Peter Okoye says he is stepping back from activism to focus on family after supporting EndSARS and Peter Obi in the 2023 elections

Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P of the former music duo Psquare, has announced that he is stepping back from activism to focus on his personal life and family.

The musician made the disclosure on Monday while responding to a social media user who questioned his silence regarding Nigeria’s economic hardship and security challenges.

Peter Okoye explained that he had already played an active role in past civic movements, including participation in the EndSARS protests in 2020 and campaigning for Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election.

“I’ve already played my part from the last election to the End SARS movement. At this point, I’m choosing to focus on my life and my family. Everyone has their own role to play,” the singer wrote.

The exchange followed posts in which the musician spoke about enjoying his time in Abuja and expressed nostalgia for Atlanta in the United States, which he described as his “second home.”

Peter Okoye also revealed that he plans to travel to Atlanta once he completes work on a new music project.

“But I can’t lie, I miss my second home Atlanta. Soon as this album is done… I’m on the first flight out,” he added.

The singer’s comments quickly triggered mixed reactions online. While some supporters praised his previous advocacy for political reform and good governance, others criticised the decision, arguing that influential public figures should remain vocal during periods of national difficulty.

Peter Okoye was among several Nigerian celebrities who publicly supported Peter Obi’s presidential bid in 2023, a campaign that drew significant attention among young voters and online communities.

Despite the criticism, the singer indicated that his immediate priority is personal wellbeing and family life after years of public engagement in civic causes.
