Police officer faces probe over alleged anti-Igbo remark during stop and search - Video

A Nigerian police officer stands accused of making a divisive ethnic remark during a vehicle stop on the Ibadan Expressway in Oyo State on Friday 24 July 2026.

The encounter has prompted strong public appeals to Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Ridwan Disu for an immediate and transparent investigation.

Officers halted a motorist and examined documents reported to be valid. A demand for cash payment then arose. When the motorist refused, tensions increased sharply.

According to the allegation shared widely online, the officer told the citizen: “If you were Igbo, I would’ve detained you.”

The statement has provoked widespread condemnation. Many Nigerians describe it as clear evidence of ethnic bias that threatens national cohesion and public safety.

Human rights voices have labelled the comment unacceptable and called for firm disciplinary measures.

Inspector-General Disu assumed office in February 2026 with a clear reform agenda. He has publicly vowed zero tolerance for corruption and emphasised that the era of impunity is over.

His administration previously banned illegal checkpoints and stressed the need for officers to treat citizens with dignity and impartiality.

Nigeria continues to grapple with ethnic sensitivities rooted in historical events, including the civil war period.

While many Igbos report feeling targeted in certain areas, complaints of police extortion and misconduct remain common nationwide, affecting people from every background.

These systemic challenges often stem from inadequate resources and oversight rather than official policy.

At the time of reporting, the Nigeria Police Force had issued no official comment on the specific incident. Public pressure mounts for swift identification of those involved and appropriate action to restore confidence.

Incidents of this nature highlight the fragile trust between citizens and police. They also underscore the importance of consistent reform to ensure every Nigerian receives equal and dignified treatment under the law, regardless of background.
