Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have killed two suspected kidnappers and recovered ₦2.2 million believed to be proceeds from criminal activities during a follow-up operation linked to the rescue of an abducted victim in the state.

The operation, carried out by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, followed the abduction of a resident at Ogbe Village on June 11, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.

Police said the victim’s abduction triggered an intensive intelligence-led investigation, with tactical teams deployed to track the kidnappers and secure the victim’s release.

After days of surveillance and sustained operational pressure, the victim was rescued unharmed on June 18, marking a significant breakthrough in the case.

Following the rescue, officers shifted their focus to identifying and apprehending members of the kidnapping syndicate believed to be responsible for the crime.

According to the police, credible intelligence led operatives to a suspected hideout within Ogun State, where the suspects reportedly attempted to evade arrest.

“On sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire in a desperate attempt to resist arrest and escape,” the statement said.

The police said a gun battle ensued, resulting in the deaths of two suspected kidnappers, while other gang members escaped with gunshot wounds.

A search of the scene led to the recovery of a single-barrel firearm, an expended cartridge, a mobile phone and ₦2.2 million in cash, which investigators suspect may be part of ransom proceeds or other criminal earnings.

The recovery of the large cash sum emerged as a key highlight of the operation, providing investigators with additional leads as they seek to dismantle the wider criminal network.

Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and uncover the full extent of the gang’s activities within and beyond Ogun State.

Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for what he described as professionalism, courage and operational effectiveness in executing the mission.

He said the outcome of the operation reinforces the command’s commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes through intelligence-driven policing.

Kidnapping has remained a major security challenge in several parts of Nigeria, prompting increased collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities.

Security experts have consistently stressed the importance of timely intelligence and public cooperation in disrupting criminal networks.

Ojajuni urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to security agencies, noting that community support remains crucial to sustaining progress in the fight against crime.

The police commissioner assured residents that the command would continue deploying strategic operations aimed at safeguarding lives, protecting property and bringing criminal elements to justice.
