The Federal Capital Territory Police Command rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after two residents alerted the police to the children’s cries.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed the incidents in a statement on Friday, September 4, saying both babies were rescued and taken for medical assessment.

The first case occurred at about 5:30pm around Obodo Street in Kurudu, where a resident identified as Innocent heard a baby crying while in the area.

After investigating the sound, Innocent discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in cloth and abandoned inside a carton.

Innocent subsequently reported the discovery at Kurudu Police Station at about 5:45pm, prompting officers from the Kurudu Division and the Juveniles and Women Care Department to respond.

The officers found the child at the scene and immediately took him to a nearby hospital for medical assessment.

According to Adeh, the baby boy was found to be in stable condition and remained under medical care while police intensified efforts to establish how he came to be abandoned.

“Upon receipt of the report, Police officers from Kurudu Division alongside officers from the Juveniles and Women Care Department of the Division were promptly dispatched to the scene, where a baby boy was found and rescued,” Adeh said.

The second incident occurred several hours later in Gwagwalada.

At about 9:40pm, another resident, identified as Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate.

Ibrahim, assisted by concerned members of the community, rescued the baby girl and reported the matter to Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15pm.

The child was subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by officers from the Juveniles and Women Care Department for medical examination.

The police said the baby girl was receiving care and would later be handed over to the Social Welfare Development authorities for further attention.

The two incidents have prompted separate investigations as police work to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonments and identify the children’s mothers or other relatives.

The Police Command did not disclose the ages of the babies or indicate whether the two cases were connected. There was also no immediate information about any suspects or arrests.

The separate discoveries have nevertheless highlighted the importance of swift intervention by residents when vulnerable children are found abandoned.

Adeh commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other community members who responded to the babies’ cries and promptly notified the authorities.

Their actions allowed both children to receive medical attention within hours of being discovered, with police confirming that the rescued babies were receiving care.

The Command appealed to members of the public with information that could help identify the children’s mothers or relatives to contact the nearest police station or reach the FCT Police Public Relations Officer.

The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and report cases involving abandoned or vulnerable children promptly, particularly where immediate medical attention or protection may be required.

For now, the focus remains on the welfare of the two babies and on tracing their families while investigators work to establish the circumstances that led to their abandonment.
