Police summon VeryDarkMan over AIG allegations

Force says allegations against AIG Moshood Jimoh are under review and urges social media influencer to honour CID invitation

The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to due process, institutional discipline and the rule of law, announcing that it has invited social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to substantiate allegations made against the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, AIG Moshood Jimoh.

The development comes amid growing public attention over the dispute between the influencer and the senior police officer, with the Force insisting that both administrative and judicial processes must be allowed to proceed without interference.

In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the criminal matter referenced in recent public comments by VeryDarkMan had already been investigated and charged to court following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

According to the police, the matter is now before a court of competent jurisdiction, making the judiciary solely responsible for determining its outcome.

“The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved,” the statement said.

While emphasising that no one is above scrutiny, the police disclosed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department had also invited AIG Moshood Jimoh for questioning over the allegations levelled against him.

The Force said the move reflects its commitment to investigating all credible complaints, regardless of the rank of the officer involved.

In addition, the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja issued a formal invitation to VeryDarkMan on July 30, 2026, requesting that he appear before investigators to provide evidence supporting the allegations he made publicly.

According to the statement, the invitation demonstrates that disciplinary and investigative processes within the Nigeria Police Force are governed by the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and established administrative procedures.

The police stressed that allegations of misconduct are addressed through formal institutional mechanisms rather than through public campaigns or social media pressure.

While acknowledging Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and criticism of public institutions, the Force cautioned against circulating allegations that have not been substantiated.

It noted that the right to free expression does not extend to defamation or attempts to compel disciplinary action through sustained public pressure.

The statement added that any police officer found culpable after investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law, while individuals who knowingly make false allegations capable of damaging the reputation of officers or the institution could also face legal consequences.

The Force urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation extended by the Force CID to enable investigators to examine his claims alongside the ongoing administrative review.

“Grievances against officers are best resolved through established complaint and oversight mechanisms rather than public campaigns designed to force disciplinary outcomes,” the statement said.

The police concluded by reiterating that no officer is above the law and pledged to continue upholding professional standards, transparency and accountability in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

The latest development adds another chapter to a dispute that has generated widespread debate on social media over police accountability, due process and the responsibilities of public commentators.

By confirming that both the senior officer and the complainant are being engaged through official channels, the Nigeria Police Force signalled its intention to allow institutional procedures and the courts, rather than public opinion, to determine the outcome of the matter.
