Abdulrahman Muhammad vows to end impunity and restore transparency in the PDP as he inaugurates a new Board of Trustees in Abuja.

Abdulrahman Muhammad, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has pledged to put an end to what he described as “impunity, manipulation, or disregard” for the party’s constitution, promising a new era of transparency and accountability.

Speaking on Friday at the inauguration of the PDP’s new Board of Trustees, held at the official residence of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, Muhammad called the occasion “a symbol of rebirth” for the opposition party.

Muhammad, formerly the National Vice Chairman (North Central), assumed leadership after the suspension of Ambassador Umar Damagum by a faction of the party led by its National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu.

The move, which announced Muhammad as Acting Chairman, has marked yet another turning point in the PDP’s turbulent leadership dynamics.

In his address, the PDP leader lamented that the party had “lost its moral balance” due to years of disunity and disregard for internal democracy. He noted that for too long, “impunity became culture, and internal democracy became an afterthought,” but insisted that “today, we have reached the point of renewal.”

Calling for unity and reflection, Abdulrahman Muhammad urged members to confront the party’s history honestly, saying the rot “did not start yesterday,” but when zoning principles were abandoned ahead of the 2015 elections.

“Today marks a significant turning point in the life of the Peoples Democratic Party,” he said. “We have come together not merely to inaugurate a new Board of Trustees, but to renew our faith in the ideals that gave birth to this great political family – justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law.”

Addressing the newly inaugurated Board, Muhammad reminded them that their positions were “not rewards for loyalty,” but “sacred trusts.” He urged them to defend justice and ensure that the PDP remains a political home for all Nigerians.

The event concluded with a closed-door meeting attended by several senior figures, including the former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; PDP National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu; and former Senator representing Abia North, Mao Ohuabunwa.

Muhammad’s vow to rebuild the PDP is being viewed by analysts as a defining test of his leadership — and a potential catalyst for a long-awaited internal reform within Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
