Portable EFCC Invitation sparks controversy as the singer says he will delay responding to an EFCC summons over alleged naira abuse

Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, on Tuesday confirmed that he had received an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of naira abuse linked to his son’s naming ceremony, but said he would not immediately honour the summons.

Portable disclosed the development in a series of videos shared on Instagram, where the musician stated that the anti-graft agency invited him to answer questions concerning activities that allegedly took place during the family event held in May.

Addressing the Portable EFCC Invitation, the singer said he had consulted his lawyer and would instead send legal representation while seeking more time before appearing before investigators.

According to Portable, his lawyer advised that prevailing security concerns and economic challenges in the country made an immediate response difficult.

The singer claimed that he would be prepared to honour the invitation in September.

Portable also questioned the basis of the allegations, insisting that he had committed no crime during the naming ceremony.

The artist maintained that he was not attempting to evade the commission and remained at home with his family.

The musician further described the invitation as oppressive and argued that the EFCC should focus more attention on tackling violent crime and other serious offences across the country.

In a passionate appeal, Portable called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, alleging that the investigation could damage his public image.

The singer insisted that he was not involved in fraud, money laundering, theft or other financial crimes.

A notable aspect of his response was his accusation that authorities were applying the law selectively in cases involving alleged naira abuse.

Portable cited several public figures and social gatherings where money was allegedly sprayed or mishandled, questioning why his case had attracted scrutiny.

The “Zazzu Zeh” hitmaker also claimed that the money involved came from a bureau de change operator and said he was repaying the funds in instalments.

Despite his criticism of the commission, Portable stressed that he was not afraid of the investigation and remained willing to cooperate at a later date.

The latest controversy adds another chapter to the singer’s eventful public profile, with the Portable EFCC Invitation generating significant discussion across social media and entertainment circles.

The EFCC has not publicly released the invitation letter referenced by the singer at the time of reporting.
