On 5 November 2026, 41-year-old Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football, prompting people in Lisbon to say they were very grateful for his service to the national team.
Ronaldo made the announcement in a video message posted on social media, stating that the day had come to hand back the number 7 shirt.

He described the decision as one made with both the head and the heart after a 23-year career that began in August 2003.
“If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it,” he said.
He thanked his family, teammates, coaches and the Portuguese people.
In the Portuguese capital, residents expressed warm appreciation for a player who had given the country its first major trophy at Euro 2016 and contributed to Nations League successes in 2019 and 2025.
Ronaldo ends his international career as Portugal’s all-time leader with 234 appearances and 146 goals, both world records.
His final competitive appearance came in a Nations League match against Wales in September.
The Portuguese Football Federation responded with a statement of profound gratitude, calling Ronaldo an inspirational leader and planning a formal tribute.
Teammate Bruno Fernandes described it as a privilege to share moments with his childhood idol.
The announcement followed a recent period of tension with coach Jorge Jesus, including a 30-day suspension after Ronaldo left the team camp, though relations had appeared to ease.
Ronaldo will continue playing at club level with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia as he pursues 1,000 career goals.
