PSG Champions League Triumph secured as the French side defeated Arsenal on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final in Budapest

Paris Saint-Germain retained their European crown after defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra time in the UEFA Champions League final at the Puskás Aréna on Saturday night.

The victory secured a historic PSG Champions League Triumph and made the French champions only the second club after Real Madrid to successfully defend the trophy in the modern Champions League era.

Arsenal, appearing in their second Champions League final and first since 2006, produced a determined performance but ultimately fell short after missed penalties from Eberechi Eze and Gabriel proved costly.

“We are so, so proud, so happy, so grateful,” PSG winger Désiré Doué said after the match.

“As a team, as a family, I think we deserve that.”

The triumph represents another landmark achievement for PSG manager Luis Enrique, who claimed his third Champions League title as a coach and joined an elite group of managers to win the competition on three occasions.

Arsenal made the brighter start and stunned the defending champions after just six minutes.

Kai Havertz capitalised on a defensive error and surged clear before rifling a powerful finish into the roof of the net to hand the Premier League champions an early lead.

The German forward, who also scored the winning goal in Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League final success, appeared set to inspire Arsenal to a famous victory.

Despite dominating possession, PSG struggled to penetrate Arsenal’s organised defensive structure during the first half.

The English side limited the influence of Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and frustrated the French champions with disciplined defending.

PSG appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after the ball struck Bukayo Saka’s arms inside the area, but referee Daniel Siebert waved away the claims.

The French side emerged with greater urgency after the interval.

Goalkeeper David Raya produced a fine save to deny Achraf Hakimi before PSG finally found a breakthrough midway through the second half.

Kvaratskhelia combined brilliantly with Ousmane Dembélé before being brought down inside the penalty area by Cristhian Mosquera.

Dembélé calmly converted from the spot, sending Raya the wrong way to level the scores and ignite celebrations among PSG supporters.

The goal was PSG’s 45th of the Champions League campaign, equalling the competition’s all-time single-season scoring record.

Both sides had opportunities to win the match before extra time.

Kvaratskhelia struck the post, while substitute Bradley Barcola squandered a promising chance as PSG began to exert greater control against a tiring Arsenal side.

Arsenal appealed for a penalty when Noni Madueke went down under pressure from Nuno Mendes, but the referee dismissed the claims.

With neither side able to find a decisive goal, the final moved to penalties.

PSG entered the shoot-out with confidence after winning several penalty contests during the season and immediately gained the advantage when Eberechi Eze fired wide for Arsenal.

Although David Raya briefly revived Arsenal’s hopes with a save from Nuno Mendes, the French champions maintained their composure.

After Lucas Beraldo converted PSG’s fourth successful penalty, Gabriel stepped forward needing to score to keep Arsenal alive.

Instead, the defender blasted his effort over the crossbar, sparking jubilant celebrations among PSG players, staff and supporters.

Midfielder Fabian Ruiz said the achievement underlined PSG’s emergence as one of Europe’s dominant forces.

“It was Real Madrid, and now it’s us too,” Ruiz said.

For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the defeat was a painful end to an impressive European campaign that showcased the club’s progress under his leadership.

For PSG, however, the night marked another step towards establishing a lasting dynasty in European football, with the club now aiming to build on successive Champions League titles and cement its place among the continent’s modern greats.
