Medical students of the Ebonyi Medical University, Uburu are expected to pay a tuition fee of five million naira when the newly established varsity commences academic activities in September.

David Umahi, the state governor, broke the news on Tuesday while flagging off the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and state health insurance scheme in Abakaliki.

According to him, non-medical students of the institution would be paying between two and three million naira as tuition and other fees when the varsity begins operation.

“Medical students will be paying N5m, while non-medical students, would be paying between N2m and N3m for tuition and other fees in the university,” he said.

The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to revamping the health sector in the state by providing functional facilities for the residents.

“Our resolve is to work tirelessly with all relevant stakeholders in Ebonyi State and at the federal level to ensure well-equipped and functional health centre in each of the 171 wards in the state,” he added.

“I want to commend highly the USAID activities in the state. We heard that you were at the new hospital of our new university. I was so excited and I pray you make good your promises. Our dream is that this should be the best hospital in the whole of Nigeria. And this is possible.”

Francis Nweze, Umahi’s media aide on Wednesday said that the fee is based on the quality of education expected at the institution.

“That’s based on the quality of education that we’re going to be delivering,” he said.

The governor had recently met with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to seek the listing of the varsity ahead of its approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
