Queen of Denmark visits Lagos terminal during Nigeria tour, praising APMT’s gender equality push and sustainable investment in female workforce development

[dropcap]Q[/dropcap]ueen Mary of Denmark made a symbolic stop at the Apapa facility of APM Terminals on Wednesday as part of her official visit to Nigeria, reinforcing her global commitment to gender equality, environmental sustainability, and inclusive growth.

This marks the first time the monarch has toured a logistics terminal in Nigeria, with the Queen visits Lagos terminal moment attracting high-level diplomatic and corporate presence.

She was accompanied by the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Jens Ole Bach Hansen, and warmly received by the CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, Mr Frederik Klinke, alongside the Terminal Manager of APMT Apapa, Mr Steen Knudsen.

Renowned for championing women and girls’ rights globally, the Queen began her visit by interacting with female equipment operators at the terminal—an area long dominated by men.

She lauded their efforts and the firm’s inclusive hiring practices.

Education and diversity are central to our workforce goals.

Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen said APMT had launched targeted initiatives to recruit women into technical and leadership roles, including mechanics and truck drivers.

“Education and initiatives to create more diversity in the workforce and more opportunities for female employees are a central part of our daily work here in our two terminals in Nigeria,” Knudsen said.

He added that the Queen visits Lagos terminal occasion was an opportunity to showcase the company’s investment in developing local talent and driving sustainable growth.

“Nigeria is a core market for APMT. We want to invest further in infrastructure that fosters sustainable development, creates jobs, and enhances global connectivity,” Knudsen said.

The visit also aligns with Denmark’s growing diplomatic and economic cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in the areas of green development, maritime trade, and gender empowerment.

Queen Mary’s visit underscores a broader message: when institutions invest in equity and diversity, they not only transform the workforce but also expand opportunities for national growth and global partnership.
