FG launches RAMCO to protect Nigeria’s power assets

The Federal Government has launched the Renewable Asset Management Company, RAMCO, in Abuja on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, as part of efforts to protect Nigeria’s power assets, improve their long-term management and prevent infrastructure from deteriorating after commissioning.

The launch brought together senior government officials and key stakeholders, including Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Iziaq Salako, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Power Lanre Babalola and Budget Office Director-General Tanimu Yakubu.

Representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, Infracorp and the Rural Electrification Agency also attended the stakeholders’ launch and media engagement session.

Tegbe said RAMCO was designed to address a longstanding weakness in the power sector, where significant investments in infrastructure have not always been matched by effective post-commissioning management.

The minister said the new vehicle would protect completed projects, optimise existing infrastructure and help ensure that public and private investments in electricity continued to deliver value.

“Our ambition is bigger than ending darkness,” Tegbe said. “Our ambition is to use electricity to build prosperity.”

He said reliable electricity was essential to making Nigeria more competitive in manufacturing, supporting digital infrastructure, improving healthcare delivery, modernising agriculture and expanding opportunities in rural communities.

Tegbe also linked RAMCO to the Federal Government’s broader power-sector reform programme, which includes efforts to stabilise the national grid, address liquidity challenges and aggregate energy assets around industrial and economic corridors.

He commended President Tinubu for supporting what he described as financially sensible and institutionally durable approaches to managing critical infrastructure.

The minister also acknowledged the contributions of MoFI, Infracorp, the Ministry of Finance, the REA under Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Abba Aliyu, and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through the Power for Health Initiative.

Aliyu said the concept behind RAMCO had been discussed for several years but had remained largely theoretical until Tegbe assumed office and pushed for its implementation.

He described the launch as evidence of the minister’s determination to move the proposal from an idea to an operational framework.

Aliyu pointed to the REA’s Energising Education Programme as an example of the need for a sustainable asset-management structure.

Since 2017, the programme has deployed 82 megawatts of solar hybrid generation across 22 federal universities and three teaching hospitals, according to the REA chief executive.

Aliyu said the investments now need to generate sufficient revenue through electricity tariffs to support their continued operation and maintenance.

The challenge highlights the importance of ensuring that power infrastructure remains productive long after the initial investment and commissioning.

REA Board Chairman Ayo Fayose also called for a change in public attitudes towards the management and preservation of government-owned infrastructure.

The introduction of RAMCO power assets therefore represents an attempt to shift attention from simply delivering new electricity projects to ensuring that completed projects remain functional and financially sustainable.

The Federal Ministry of Power said the initiative forms part of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reaffirmed its commitment to improving the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply across the country.

The ministry said it would continue working with government agencies, private-sector stakeholders and development partners on RAMCO and wider reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electricity industry.

The success of the initiative will ultimately depend on how effectively RAMCO can maintain existing infrastructure, recover investment costs and create commercially sustainable models for managing renewable and other strategic power assets.
