In a move to celebrate its 57th anniversary and promote youth empowerment, the Rivers State Government is set to host its first-ever Rivers International Marathon on May 18, 2024.

The event, organized in collaboration with Arch Raphael Limited, aims to highlight the state’s cultural heritage and position it as a hub for social enterprise, entertainment, and commerce.

According to a release made available to Freelanews and signed by RIM media rep, Tolu Oguntimehin, the marathon, timed to coincide with the state’s anniversary since its establishment on May 27, 1967, is seen as a strategic initiative under Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s leadership.

Femi Abegunde, the project consultant, emphasized the marathon’s alignment with the governor’s commitment to empowering the youth and creating a conducive environment for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“The Rivers International Marathon not only acknowledges the pivotal role of sports in providing opportunities for the youth but also directly promotes the governor’s vision of creating projects that catalyze SME growth. Sports, as a grassroots influencer, touches every facet of society,” stated Abegunde.

Highlighting the economic potential of the initiative, he added, “This marathon will create opportunities for widespread youth engagement, stimulate businesses, and offer prospects for individuals before, during, and after the race. The engagement spans various sectors, including traditional media, social media influencers, national and state-level athletics federation members, out-of-home providers, graphic artists, signage experts, food vendors, and marketers of various goods and services. It also aims to enhance the state’s internally generated revenue.”

Marathon enthusiasts from across Africa are expected to participate, with the registration portal set to open on February 15, 2024, welcoming both local and international runners. The event promises to be a dynamic platform, engaging diverse stakeholders and contributing to the overall development and economic growth of Rivers State.

As anticipation builds, the Rivers International Marathon stands poised to be a landmark event, showcasing the state’s commitment to sports, culture, and economic development. Stay tuned for updates as Rivers State counts down to this historic marathon.
