Rivers United CAF match officials named as CAF appoints Libyan referees for RS Berkane clash, despite Nigerian side already eliminated

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Libyan officials for the Champions League tie between Rivers United and Morocco’s RS Berkane, despite Rivers United already being eliminated from the competition.

FIFA-accredited referee Moataz Al-Shalmani will take charge at the centre, supported by fellow Libyans Mohamed Mangi and Bassem Saif Al-Nasr as assistant referees.

Another compatriot, Al-Mabrouk Mohamed, has been appointed as the fourth official.

Rivers United, managed by Finidi George, suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to holders Pyramids FC in their previous match, confirming their exit from the CAF Champions League.

CAF’s appointment of Libyan officials underscores the confederation’s commitment to neutrality and maintaining standardised officiating across the continent’s premier club competitions.

The RS Berkane clash remains significant for the Moroccan side as they aim to consolidate their standing in the group stage, while Rivers United look to conclude their campaign on a competitive note despite elimination.
