Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s 41-year-old captain, could face a suspension of between one and six months from international football after leaving the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, with the Portuguese Football Federation yet to determine whether his departure amounted to an unjustified abandonment of national-team duty.
The potential Ronaldo six-month ban stems from Article 160 of the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary regulations.

The provision states that a player who has been duly called up and unjustifiably abandons or fails to attend national-team training, a match or another official activity can receive a suspension of one to six months, alongside a financial penalty for professional players.
The regulations also state that an absence or abandonment can trigger an automatic preventive suspension while the disciplinary matter is considered.
However, the available reporting does not establish that Ronaldo has already received such a final punishment.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp after head coach Jorge Jesus indicated that the forward would not start the Nations League match against Denmark.
The departure followed a conversation between Ronaldo and FPF president Pedro Proença, after which Ronaldo announced on social media that he had decided to leave the camp.
“Following the national team coach’s press conference, and after having a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team’s training camp,” Ronaldo said in his statement.
Ronaldo did not give a detailed explanation for his decision but promised to provide his account later.
“In due course, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national side,” he added.
The situation developed after Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on September 27.
Jesus later acknowledged that Ronaldo had been unhappy after warming up without being introduced, although the coach rejected suggestions that there had been a serious confrontation between them.
Jesus subsequently confirmed that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark, saying that team selection remained his responsibility.
The coach had also defended his authority in striking terms, saying, “No player will ever change my mind. Not him, not anyone in football. Not any president either. Never, zero.”
The disagreement has now developed into a significant disciplinary issue for the Portuguese federation. The crucial question is not simply whether Ronaldo left camp, which both Ronaldo and the FPF have confirmed, but whether the circumstances surrounding his departure provide a justification under the federation’s rules.
That distinction is important because Ronaldo informed Proença of his decision before leaving. Reports have not established whether the federation authorised the departure or whether it will ultimately regard the decision as justified.
The FPF has not publicly announced a final disciplinary ruling.
Portugal have already moved forward without their captain.
Ronaldo missed the Denmark fixture, while Rafael Leão was handed the No. 7 shirt for the match because of Ronaldo’s absence from the squad.
The episode has also raised fresh questions about Ronaldo’s international future.
The 41-year-old remains Portugal’s most-capped player and leading international goalscorer, but his abrupt departure has created an uncertain moment for both the player and the national team.
Portugal’s next Nations League assignment is against Norway at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto on October 4.
The fixture will take place while the circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s departure remain unresolved.
For now, reports of a six-month ban should therefore be treated as a possible maximum sanction, not a confirmed punishment.

The final outcome depends on how the Portuguese Football Federation interprets Ronaldo’s departure and whether disciplinary proceedings result in a suspension.
