The decision, announced on Wednesday in Lagos, signals a renewed commitment by the state government to harness sports as a tool for youth engagement, economic growth, and international recognition.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the plan would deliver modern facilities across key districts while strengthening talent identification programmes in schools and local communities.

The initiative also includes partnerships with private investors to ensure sustainability and global standards.

The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, who provided further details, described the move as a “transformative step” that would unlock opportunities for young athletes and create jobs within the sports value chain.

He noted that the programme would prioritise inclusivity, with provisions for women and persons with disabilities, ensuring broader participation across all levels of society.

Stakeholders in the sports sector have welcomed the development, praising the administration’s decisive approach.

Some analysts said the initiative could restore Lagos’ dominance in national competitions while attracting international events to the state.

A secondary highlight emerged during the announcement, as the governor emphasised the role of community-based competitions in fostering unity and discovering hidden talent.

The remark drew applause from attendees, many of whom have long advocated for grassroots-focused reforms.

While implementation timelines are expected to be released in the coming weeks, officials expressed confidence that the plan would deliver measurable impact within its first phase.
