Segun Showunmi advises governors to focus on state-led growth as Lagos hosts E1, warning that Lagos’ economy could outpace Nigeria’s if others lag.
Segun Showunmi has urged Nigeria’s state governors to focus on driving their own economic development, warning that Lagos could outgrow the national economy if others fail to act swiftly.
Speaking as Lagos hosted the prestigious E1 Championship, the political strategist congratulated the state for its commitment to tourism and innovation but called on other governors to “get busy with themselves” to avoid being left behind.
“The Lagos economy might become much bigger than the Nigerian economy if things move speedily in the direction of tourism,” Showunmi said.
He reminded governors that both states and the 774 local governments now have increased revenues and must use the funds effectively.
“Nigeria has truly turned the corner, and now we stay the course,” he declared.
Showunmi emphasised that any obstacle to progress must be tackled decisively.
“Any enemy of the state that constitutes himself, herself, or themselves into an obstacle must be moved swiftly. We have rigmoroled enough. Now we leapfrog,” he stated.
He applauded Lagos for attracting global attention and likened the city’s tourism ambitions to global hubs such as Dubai, Las Vegas, and Paris.
“You cannot love Dubai, Las Vegas and Paris and come and hate Nigeria. Pack your load and go to where you live and leave Nigeria for all who love and wish her well,” he added.
Showunmi’s remarks come amid renewed focus on subnational economies and their role in driving Nigeria’s broader economic transformation.
Segun Showunmi is a prominent Nigerian political strategist, public speaker, and former gubernatorial aspirant in Ogun State.
He is well known for his role as the spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation during the 2019 general election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
