Grand Mufti of Yorubaland urges Oke-Ogun to back Muslim governor in Oyo State, says non-Muslims should not hold leadership positions

Grand Mufti of Yorubaland urges Oke-Ogun to back Muslim governor, says non-Muslims should not hold leadership positions

The Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, has sparked a fresh conversation over religion and political representation in Oyo State after urging residents of Oke-Ogun to support the emergence of a Muslim governor during a recent address.

The cleric’s call centred on his appeal for residents of the region to unite behind a Muslim candidate, arguing that such leadership would bring greater benefits to the area.

Speaking during the engagement, Sheikh Molaasan said religious identity should be considered in choosing political leaders, stating that non-Muslims should not occupy leadership positions.

“Any non-Muslim should not be allowed in any leadership position. You people in Oke-Ogun should unite and make a Muslim governor in Oyo State because you will be the ones to benefit more from it,” he said.

Grand Mufti referenced the administration of former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as an example of what he described as the positive impact of Muslim leadership.

“This is exactly what we did with Aregbesola in Osun State, and he has been the best governor the state has ever had,” Sheikh Molaasan added.

The comments have generated debate among residents and observers, with discussions focusing on the place of religion in Nigeria’s democratic process and whether political leadership should be determined by faith, competence or other considerations.

Oyo State, like other states in the South-West, has a history of religious diversity, with Christians and Muslims participating actively in politics and occupying major public offices.

Previous elections in the state have largely been influenced by issues such as development, governance, party structures and public support.

The Oke-Ogun region, which comprises several local government areas in northern Oyo State, has frequently called for greater political representation and attention to infrastructure, agriculture and economic development.

While supporters of religious representation argue that communities should have the freedom to promote leaders who reflect their values, critics have maintained that public offices should remain open to qualified candidates regardless of religious background.

Sheikh Molaasan’s remarks are expected to continue fuelling conversations around inclusion, identity and political strategy as political activities ahead of future elections gain momentum.
