Shepherd Kills Wife, Dies Hours Later in Ogun

Residents of Akiode Ibogun are struggling to understand how a couple regarded as friendly and respectful ended up dead within hours of a violent domestic dispute.

Residents of Akiode Ibogun in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State are still grappling with a devastating incident that claimed the lives of a Celestial Church of Christ shepherd and his wife within hours of each other.

The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Monday, August 31, 2026, when Abidemi Odukoya, Shepherd-in-Charge of the Celestial Church of Christ, Iri Orun Parish, allegedly attacked his wife, Adenike Odukoya, during a domestic dispute at their home in the Ogooluwa community.

According to accounts from community leaders and residents, the confrontation occurred at about 2am.

The couple lived in a three-bedroom bungalow beside their church, where they had reportedly spent about nine or 10 years in the community. Residents described them as friendly, respectful and generally peaceful, making the violent turn of events particularly difficult for many to comprehend.

The Baale of Akiode, Chief Taiwo Akiode, said residents alerted him around 3am after first contacting the police over the alleged attack.

He said he was informed that Odukoya had macheted his wife. When community members arrived at the residence, Adenike was reportedly found in a pool of blood with an injury believed to have been caused by a machete.

A stool was also reportedly found at the scene, with the community leader saying residents were told it had been used during the attack.

Police officers later visited the residence and photographed the scene, while Odukoya was reportedly nowhere to be found.

The shepherd was said to have left the community after the incident and headed towards the Ifo section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

By about 7am, another report reached the community that Odukoya had been killed after reportedly running into the path of a moving truck around the Iyana Coker area.

Chief Akiode said people who witnessed his movements on the expressway told residents that Odukoya had crossed the road repeatedly before sitting on the median.

He was reportedly struck after moving towards an approaching truck.

Other reports have similarly linked Odukoya’s death to a vehicle collision along the expressway, although accounts differ on the precise circumstances leading to the fatal incident.

The deaths left the community facing an extraordinary situation, with both husband and wife being buried beside their home later that day.

Akiode said the tragedy was particularly shocking because nothing in the couple’s public relationship had prepared residents for such an outcome.

He described the incident as unprecedented in the community and said residents had never known the couple as troublesome or quarrelsome during their years in the area.

The community leader said the tragedy had left residents asking what could have gone wrong inside a home that had appeared peaceful from the outside.

Further details about the possible cause of the dispute emerged from Seun Adelana, the community’s youth leader, who alleged that accusations of infidelity involving both husband and wife were at the centre of the crisis.

However, the claim remains an allegation from a community source and has not been independently established as the definitive cause of the violent confrontation.

The incident has also prompted renewed concern about domestic violence and the need for couples experiencing serious marital difficulties to seek intervention before disagreements escalate into violence.

Akiode urged couples to approach marital disputes with greater patience and seek counselling or other forms of assistance when problems become difficult to manage.

For Akiode Ibogun residents, however, the immediate reality remains the loss of two people they had known for years.

What began as a private domestic disagreement ended within hours with a woman dead, her husband also dead and a community left trying to understand how a seemingly ordinary household could descend into such a devastating tragedy.
