Witnesses near the scene said armed men dressed in police and army uniforms opened fire on the pilot vehicle of the convoy linked to former governor Chris Ngige.

His aides confirmed that he was not travelling with the team at the time of the Ngige Convoy Attack, which unfolded in broad daylight on Thursday.

A police operative in the lead car sustained a gunshot injury and had his weapon and uniform seized by the assailants. A young woman who attempted to record the shooting was struck by a bullet.

shop owner who rushed out during the gunfire was also hit and lost significant blood, though doctors expect a full recovery once surgery is completed.

Eyewitnesses said the pilot car suffered extensive bullet damage.

Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga stated that a coordinated response enabled officers to recover a white Mercedes Benz SUV that had been snatched earlier by the attackers.

He said teams from Tactical Operations, the Rapid Response Squad and the Special Anti Cultism Unit joined forces in a powerful pursuit that forced the criminals to abandon the vehicle.

Ikenga added that the injured officer remains stable and is receiving treatment. Preliminary information confirmed that the convoy involved is attached to Senator Chris Ngige, who previously served as governor and as minister.

He said the recovered vehicle is now secured as investigators intensify a state wide operation to track down the fleeing gunmen.

Residents told reporters that the violence has heightened anxiety in communities along Umuoji Road.
