‘Sick for a month’ How I won against COVID-19, Kano Task Force co-chair reveals

The co-chairman of the Kano State Task Force, Prof. Abdulrazak Garba Habib, has revealed how he survived COVID-19 infection while on admission for 20 days.

The experience of the don, who has now tested negative to the virus, was posted via the Twitter handle of the Kano State Ministry of Health @KNSMOH.

Prof. Habib, who was discharged from a Kano isolation centre on Thursday, said he contracted the infection while serving as a member of the Kano State COVID-19 Task Force.

“I suffered a moderately severe disease with high fever, cough, mild shortness of breath, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, hypokalemia (low level of potassium), severe weakness, and ultimately, mild shock.

“I was sick for about one month and was on admission for 20 days,” he said.

According to him, he was treated with many medications, intravenous fluids, oxygen by nasal cannulae as well as steam inhalation using black seed, clove oil, ginger tea, among other things. “Overall, I lost 7Kg in weight,” he said.

Habib reiterated the need for healthcare workers to adhere to the preventive measures of social distancing, lockdown, use of face masks and provision and utilisation of personal protective equipment.

“I am saddened to learn several colleagues have been infected and I pray none has a stormy course. I also pray they have a fast and full recovery.

“I would like to seize this opportunity to express my gratitude and thanks to God the Almighty, and to friends, well-wishers, colleagues within the healthcare industry who rallied around my care through consistent prayers and actual provision and facilitation of care.

“I believe we should not relent on all the measures, the preventive measures, curative measures, palliative measures, while praying to God Almighty to bring an end to the pandemic here in Nigeria and everywhere. Thank you! Ma’assalaam!

“In particular, I would like to thank all colleagues within the MDCAN, NMA, NARD, JOHESU, other healthcare worker groups, and others,” Habib noted.

As it stands, Kano is the second epicentre of Nigeria’s COVID-19 infections with 482 of the overall 3,526 cases.

So far, Kano has discharged 19 patients and 13 deaths recorded.
