Singapore child support will rise to nearly $70,000 per child as Lawrence Wong unveils a broader package covering families from birth to age 17

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced a major expansion of government assistance for families in Singapore on Sunday, August 23, 2026, unveiling a new Singapore child support package that will provide every Singaporean child with almost $70,000 in direct financial support from birth to age 17, regardless of birth order.

The $62,000 SG Child Support Package, announced during Wong’s National Day Rally speech, is designed to make family assistance simpler while spreading government support more evenly across a child’s formative years.

The package includes a $10,000 Baby Gift, $32,000 in Child Credits, a $5,000 Child Development Account First Step Grant, up to $5,000 in government CDA co-matching contributions and a $10,000 top-up to the child’s Post-Secondary Education Account.

When existing benefits such as the $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and annual Edusave contributions are included, total direct financial support will reach almost $70,000 for each Singaporean child through age 17.

Wong said the overhaul was intended to move beyond piecemeal adjustments to existing family support schemes.

“The work is still ongoing. We are aiming for more than incremental improvements or changes to individual schemes. We want to make a fundamental shift in how we support families,” he said.

The new system also removes the distinction in support based on whether a child is a first, second or subsequent child.

Wong said the existing arrangements had become difficult for parents to navigate because support varied according to birth order.

“We will make things simpler. Every child will receive the same level of support. We will provide more support not just at birth but throughout the years, as children grow up,” he said.

Under the revised arrangement, the $10,000 Baby Gift will be paid in two instalments during the first 12 months after birth, giving families additional assistance during a period when childcare and household expenses can rise sharply.

The new Child Credits will provide $2,000 annually from the year a child turns one until the year the child turns 16. The measure replaces and expands the existing Large Family LifeSG Credits, which provide $1,000 annually for six years to each third and subsequent child.

The Child Development Account will also remain open until the end of the year in which a child turns 16, extending the period from the current age limit of 12.

At birth, the CDA will receive a $5,000 First Step Grant, while parents can receive up to another $5,000 through government co-matching contributions.

When a child turns 17, the Government will provide a further $10,000 into the child’s Post-Secondary Education Account to help offset the cost of higher education.

The measures will not apply only to newborns. Singaporean children aged between one and 17 in 2026 will also benefit under transitional arrangements, with payments adjusted according to their age and existing support arrangements.

More than 610,000 children across about 380,000 households were expected to benefit from the measures as of June, according to the reported figures.

The changes represent a substantial increase from the roughly $27,500 to $56,500 in direct financial support currently available to children, depending on their birth order.

The Government is also retaining additional support for larger families with three or more children, particularly in healthcare, transport and housing.

Officials are studying whether to extend the existing $5,000 Large Family MediSave Grant to eligible large families that have not yet received it.

The Ministry of Transport is expected to provide additional help with transport costs, while the Ministry of National Development is examining further housing support.

The broader package comes as Singapore continues to place family support and parenthood at the centre of its social policy.

Wong stressed in his National Day Rally that families remain fundamental to the country’s future and that government assistance should evolve alongside the pressures faced by parents.

The reforms therefore mark a significant shift in emphasis, moving from support concentrated around childbirth towards sustained assistance as children grow.

For families, the most immediate change is the introduction of a uniform level of support for every child, while the longer-term measures are intended to help with childcare, education and other costs through adolescence.

The Government has also built transitional provisions into the new framework. Children born before April 1, 2027, who are still receiving Baby Bonus Cash Gift payments will continue receiving them until March 31, 2027, with applicable top-ups to bring their total Baby Gift support to $10,000.

From 2028, Child Credits will be paid annually on a child’s birthday until the year the child turns 16, while the existing Large Family LifeSG Credits will cease.

The policy gives Singapore’s family-support system a more streamlined structure while providing a substantial and sustained financial cushion to parents as their children progress from infancy towards higher education.
